Renee Bowran
Senior Paediatric Physiotherapist
Meet Renee
Can you tell us about your background and experience?
I am a Senior Physiotherapist with 28 years experience in paediatric physiotherapy. My first two years were rotating through a variety of adult and paediatric areas before moving full time into provision of physiotherapy for the paediatric population. I have worked in a variety of clinical settings including a number NSW Health hospitals, The Sydney Children’s Hospital as well as community based settings including rural disability outreach services in Queensland Australia. I opened a private paediatric physiotherapy clinic in 2013.
What specific areas do you have expertise in?
I have experience in a wide range of paediatric conditions in physiotherapy, and in particular enjoy working with children with disabilities and their families. In my private practice I work with children with complex disabilities including cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions, progressive neuromuscular conditions and genetic developmental conditions.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love work closely with children and their families to assist in maximising their capacity and function across their homes, schools and communities. I enjoy engaging with children and their families in a goals based approach, helping every child, with every ability and looking at every possibility. I also really enjoy mentoring physiotherapists and physiotherapy students in skill development in the area of paediatrics.
Tell us about any special achievements or experiences?
I have had the privilege of working with children and their families in Papua New Guinea through Open Heart International, an outreach program for children with cardiac conditions. It was pretty cool, I made it to the front page of the national newspaper and titled “the bubble lady” as they covered a story on the program and physiotherapy rehabilitation post cardiac surgery.
Outside work I love catching up with my teenage and adult children over meals, and hiking with my husband wherever we might travel in Australia or the world. I also love music and reading.
