Shannon Edwards nee Kirk

NDIS Support Coordinator

Meet Shannon …

Can you tell us about your background in the disability sector?
I have eight years of experience working in the disability sector in a range of different roles. My work has included supporting Aboriginal health in the Wheatbelt and Midwest, as well as assisting people experiencing amputations. I have worked extensively with individuals seeking SDA and/or SIL funding, consistently achieving positive outcomes for my clients. Over the past six years, I have gained significant experience in both Support Coordination and Specialist Support Coordination roles.

I’ve also worked as a support worker, which has allowed me to support a variety of people and deepen my knowledge of different diagnoses. This has helped me refine my individual support planning and acknowledge that everyone is unique, often requiring tailored supports. Recently, I completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in Human Services.

In 2023, I worked as a Service Delivery Manager, which gave me invaluable experience and a better understanding of how different aspects of the disability sector work together. I take pride in maintaining strong working relationships with other providers and key stakeholders.

I have a particular interest in further study to better support individuals with intellectual disabilities within the justice system. I have recently been accepted into a Masters in Sexology, with a focus on supporting individuals with diagnoses and addressing their sexual health needs.

How do your personal values and experiences shape the way you approach your work and support others?
I am compassionate and a strong advocate for choice, control, and basic human rights. I actively encourage individuals to make their own decisions and firmly support their right to ‘dignity of risk.’ I work hard to think creatively and find positive outcomes for my clients, always striving to ensure that they have the freedom and support to live their lives on their own terms.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Outside of work, I can usually be found having cuddles with my dogs, watching Netflix while eating Doritos, and spending quality time with my family.
